The “Roots of My Hair” captures not just the visuals of my childhood, but what it felt like, the love, the chaos, and the unbreakable bond of family. Growing up in a full house meant there was never a dull moment, and we shared a common social connection developed through hair. These moments of braiding and unbraiding became rituals of care and culture, deeply tied to our heritage. Our sibling squabbles would take a pause when we came together to help one another braiding tight small braids to perfection. We would laugh, talk, watch TV, and create a safe space to be our authentic selves.
It wasn’t just about styling hair; it was a practice of resilience, a way to reaffirm our unity despite everyday challenges. This ink drawing represents the unconditional love of a family and how we set our differences aside to be present, to build each other up. In sharing this work, I hope the audience feels the intimacy and strength that comes from these quiet, shared traditions, a legacy of love passed through generations.
